Travel Diary: Berlin, Germany

El mundo es un lugar inmeso lleno de historias que contar, aventuras y experiencias que vivir; pero sobretodo, es el libro más hermoso del que podamos aprender. Existen lugares en este planeta que nos ofrecen experiencias culinarias, otros aventuras extremas, unos simplemente nos deleitan con el encanto de sus locales, pero hay países que para entenderlos, debemos conocer primero su historia. Viajamos hasta Berlín, Alemania para saber cómo un país con un pasado tan oscuro, se ha convertido en una potencia mundial. Acompáñenme a recordar esta travesía por las calles de la capital de Alemania.

Berlín es una ciudad digna de admirar. Por ser la capital de Alemania, sufrió grandes daños durantes las épocas más oscuras de este país. En todo momento, se vio afectada por la obsesión de poder de políticos que marcaron y mancharon la historia del mundo; sin embargo, hoy en día, es una de las capitales más desarrolladas, organizadas y económicamente importantes del mundo.

Berlín es el mejor ejemplo de aprender de nuestros errores para ser una mejor versión de nosotros mismos en el futuro. Luego de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la ciudad parecía un mundo post apocalíptico, todo fue destruido. La ciudad fue bombardeada 363 veces y muchos museos, palacios, iglesias y sitios culturales se perdieron. Su proceso de reconstrucción comenzó en 1948, pero no terminó sino hasta la década de los '80. Curiosamente, me pareció extraño que esta ciudad europea tuviera una arquitectura mucho más moderna que otras donde observamos construcciones  de estilo mediaval, pero ahora entiendo la razón por la que esta ciudad es tan diferente y lo que más me sorprende es la habilidad que tienen sus habitantes de mejorarla aún más.

Conocer lugares tan icónicos y con un gran valor historico nos permitió analizar cada aspecto de la cultura de este país. Durante nuestro viaje recorrimos el East Side Galery, un museo al aire libre donde se pueden observar obras de artes sobre, nada más y nada menos, restos del muro de Berlín. Además, conocimos otros lugares donde se observan restos del muro. Paseamos por los famosos mercados navideños, recorrimos Alexanderplatz y degustamos de la famosa cerveza alemana. Incluso, compartimos con locales, aprendimos sobre las políticas de reciclaje de este país y disfrutamos de un invierno atípico.

Uno de los detalles más peculiares que tiene esta ciudad es su famoso "Ampelmännchen" o en español: "el hombre del semaforo". Este símbolo tan insignificativo en algunos países es una referencia importante en Berlín. El Ampelmännchen es una silueta que representa a un hombre con sombrero en los semaforos peatonales de la extinta República Democrática Alemana, o mejor conocida como la Alemania Socialista. Así, identificando al Ampelmännchen puedes saber de qué lado del muro te encontrarías si estuvierasen la época del muro.

Definitivamente, conocer la historia de una ciudad es una experiencia muy enriquecedora que te permite entender y valorar lo que es el mundo hoy en día. Además, te invita a no repetir los errores del pasado y a ser siempre una mejor versión de ti. Berlín sin duda alguna es una ciudad muy interesante a nivel histórico y me alegra saber que todo su pasado quedo en la historia y actualmente, es la ciudad que es, una ciudad moderna, desarrollada y con visión hacia el futuro.

Porque más que un estilo de vida, viajar es un libro de aprendizajes.

The world is an big place full of stories to tell, adventures and experiences to live; but above all, it is the most beautiful book we can learn from. There are places on this planet that offer us culinary experiences, others extreme adventures, some simply delight us with the charm of their locals, but there are countries that to understand them, we must first know their history. We traveled to Berlin, Germany to know how a country with such a dark past has become a world power. Come with me to remember this journey through the streets of the German capital.

Berlin is a city worthy of admiration. Because it is the capital of Germany, it suffered great damages during the darkest times of this country. It was affected by the obsession with power of politicians who marked and tainted the history of the world; however, nowadays, it is one of the most developed, organized and economically important capitals in the world.

Berlin is the best example of learning from our mistakes to be a better version of ourselves in the future. After the Second World War, the city looked like a post-apocalyptic world, everything was destroyed. The city was bombed 363 times and many museums, palaces, churches and cultural sites were lost. Its reconstruction process began in 1948, but it did not end until the 1980s. Interestingly, I found it strange that this European city had a much more modern architecture than others where we observe medieval style buildings, but now I understand the reason why this city is so different and what surprises me most is the ability of its inhabitants to improve it even more.

Knowing such iconic places with a great historical value allowed us to analyze every aspect of the culture of this country. During our trip we toured the East Side Galery, an open-air museum where you can see works of art on remains of the Berlin Wall. In addition, we met other places where there are remnants of the wall. We walked through the famous Christmas markets, toured Alexanderplatz and tasted the famous German beer. We even shared with locals, learned about the recycling policies of this country and enjoyed an atypical winter.

One of the most peculiar details that this city has is its famous "Ampelmännchen" or in English: "the man of the traffic light". This insignificant symbol in some countries is an important reference in Berlin. The Ampelmännchen is a silhouette that represents a man with a hat in the pedestrian traffic lights of the extinct German Democratic Republic, or better known as the Socialist Germany. Thus, identifying the Ampelmännchen you can know which side of the wall you would be if you were at the time of the wall.

Definitely, knowing the history of a city is a very enriching experience that allows you to understand and value what the world is today. In addition, it invites you not to repeat the mistakes of the past and to always be a better version of you. Berlin is undoubtedly a very interesting city at the historical level and I am happy to know that all its past remained in history and now, it is the city that is, a modern city, developed and with a vision towards the future.

Because more than a lifestyle, traveling is a book of learning.
