Lucy Siegle once said: "fashion can never be considered a disposable product". When we remember the impact of textile waste on the planet, we remember that there are ways to reduce this environmental impact and find alternatives that extend the lifecycle of a garment. These alternatives are endless and today, many initiatives worldwide are applying the upcycling technique as a way to generate sustainable solutions for the fashion industry. In Venezuela, there is an initiative that presents the opportunity to give a new destination to old clothes and fabric waste in order to deliver hope and smiles.

Leather Heart started as a social project of a business. However, its founders Andrés and Mariangel, wanted to separate both initiatives to give their own vision to an innovative and sustainable project.

Pepe, Pancho and Ela are the main characters of this story called Leather Heart. Three stuffed animals made with clothes and fabric waste that were going to be discarded, but that, under the preparation and elaboration of empowered women, seek to give smiles, provide spaces of joy and give back to children who need it. Under the motto: "You buy one and we donate another", the Leather Heart team makes donations to children in vulnerable situations in order to make them a smile.

Leather Heart as a social project focuses on three aspects that classify it as an ethical and sustainable project.

Empowerment

Through a quality work that translates into the active participation of the workers to help their family and environment or community

Support to communities

Through donations of teddies and coloring stories given to children in vulnerable situations. Leather Heart supports communities by giving away a happy childhood, rescuing the value of reading and teaching inclusive sharing. Also, through the sales made of stuffed animals, they donate food dishes to the dining rooms of the initiative @alimentalasolidaridad.

Ecological responsibility

Since these toys are made with the remains of fabrics and clothes that were to be discarded by applying the technique of upcycling, the use of a raw material that does not generate a negative footprint in the environment is promoted and stimulates the circular economy for a brighter and sustainable future.

At More Than A Lifestyle Blog we believe that this last point is important to highlight in a socio-environmental context where there is no culture of recycling at all. However, for the Leather Heart team, this type of initiative invites from the example to generate a greater connection with the planet and its citizens. In addition, they mention that "one of the premises of the project is to learn to see things that already exist with new eyes, from the youngest to adults can promote practices associated with recycling if they have had an enriching experience with a project that is aligned with this culture. "

These types of projects show that sustainability can be applied in any context as long as there is a purpose. In the case of Leather Heart, its sales of 100 percent products made with recycled material by empowered women and the transparency with which they demonstrate their work process, make this a project that drives and motivates to look for alternatives to provide second opportunities, not only the clothes and fabrics that we no longer use, but also those children who benefit from this initiative.

The fashion industry has undoubtedly generated controversy at the environmental and social level, but also aroused a new community that seeks to generate, promote and apply sustainable solutions that give brands and consumers the opportunity to seek alternatives to reduce their negative impact in the environment. That is why we invite you to learn a little more about this very friendly project known as Leather Heart and to collaborate with this initiative to continue giving hope to many children.

Because more than a lifestyle, it's a new opportunity.
